Why Pilates?

Welcome to SALT Wellness, I’m Emma Rogerson the founder. As an experienced Pilates teacher and qualified Physiotherapist, I created SALT Wellness as an antidote to the growing trend of large group Pilates classes.

I wanted to develop a studio that would deliver quality Pilates tuition; where the needs and abilities of the individual would be considered. A studio where the client wasn’t just another body on the mat.

I have always been fascinated by the human body and originally trained as a Physiotherapist in London – see my official CV

It was while I was working as a Physiotherapist that I suffered a back injury and after 18 months of treatment and no significant improvement, I sought out an alternative solution.

After 6 weeks of attending a weekly Pilates class, I was pain free and my back pain has never returned. Due to the resolution of my own pain through Pilates, I knew then that I had to offer Pilates as a treatment option to my Physiotherapy clients and saw huge improvements as a result.

This was because my patients were able to start taking responsibility for their recovery and had been given strategies, through Pilates, to be able to manage and improve their pain, by increasing their strength and stability.

After a while, I realised I was using hands on intervention less and less, yet I was getting better long term results with my clients.

I am devoted to improving wellbeing and nourishing your mind, body and soul. I am really looking forward to welcoming you to SALT Wellness!

A little insight into the things that aside from Pilates bring me joy, in no particular order!

  • My beautiful daughters, Madeleine and Fleur, who challenge me on a daily basis to be a role model and set an example to them as empowered women. They bring purpose to my life.
  • Drinking good gin and eating delicious food, preferably healthy and vegetarian, but equally a good chip can be the way to my heart!
  • Food seems to be theme – Truffle, in any form, in Mac ‘n’ Cheese, on fries with parmesan, in gin, on pasta or in a sauce = Heaven to me.
  • My girlfriends – laughing, drinking and dancing. They bring sanity to my life.
  • Travel and adventure – I love to be spontaneous, visiting new and unusual places. We are currently converting a Mercedes Sprinter into a Campervan!
  • Books, books and more books – fiction or personal development, anything that will expand my mind. I am currently obsessed with Dr. Joe Dispenza’s teachings and meditations.
  • The beach or the mountains. Vast swathes of sky and an amazing vista along with the smell of the earth or saltiness of the sea.
  • Sunshine
  • Peace and quiet – which I don’t get very often. Being in my own space, with my own thoughts, preferably cosy by a fire in the winter or outside with the sun on my face in the summer.

My CV

I qualified as a Chartered Physiotherapist in 1996 from The University of East London, spending my university years living in Whitechapel at The Royal London Hospital.

From 1996-1999 my first post was at St Mary’s Hospital Paddington, where I covered all areas of Physiotherapy, including paediatrics, neurology, musculoskeletal and respiratory physiotherapy.

As a student physiotherapist, I had been lucky enough to have a work placement at The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery at Queens Square, so when a Senior Physiotherapist role came up I jumped at the chance to work there from 1999-2002.

I worked with patients with a variety of neurological conditions, including stroke, brain injury, MS and Parkinson’s disease and worked in both the acute and ITU departments as well as within the rehabilitation teams.

My work there concluded with a role as a Senior Research Physiotherapist on a study looking at the effects of Cannabis on the symptoms of MS.

After having my children, I wanted to combine my Physiotherapy knowledge and my own personal experience with Pilates, so established SALT Wellness in 2009.

I retrained as a Pilates teacher over 12 years ago with The Pilates Foundation© and completed my Masters Certificate in Pilates to become a Comprehensive teacher with JPilates© in 2016. I am devoted to empowering my clients; helping them to alleviate any pain, increase their awareness and strengthen their bodies.

I have trained in matwork, equipment and pre and postnatal Pilates.
